    I wish I had the artistic talent to make this shine
    ASCII art paint program that supports all the useful things you expect
    Layers, fill, line, shapes etc.
    Dev also made Cogmind which is a fantastic little tech-centric rougelike

Fractal Stuff

  Chaoscope
    A great little strange attractor browser.
    Quick and easy to use, but still generates some wonderful images.
  
  JWildfire
    Flame fractal renderer in the style of the older Apophysis program.
    This one is a work of art. Both the program and it's results.
    It's capabilities massively exceed my knowledge but I keep digging back in and learning more.
  
  Ultra Fractal
    A great jumping off point for traditional 2D fractals.
    Free evaluation version has a 30 day trial which can by circumvented by changing clock time.
    A "free" copy of the current version (6.05) is also available with a bit of yar-har-fiddle-dee-dee
  
  Fract by Searles
    Android based and surprisingly capable.
    The built-in lighting effect is a pain a lot of the time but can be disabled easily.
    Very easy to customise and modify fractals, right down to defining new variables on the fly.
    This one is a great go-to if I'm having trouble sleeping.
